Are you getting email spam after LAC?

Don't know what other affiliates are experiencing, but following conferences we get SO MUCH spam in our email inbox from advertisers we never even spoke to at conferences.

Take LAC for example - we were very careful as to who we handed business cards out to, and didn't let any of the people scanning badges to take our details, yet this week we must have been contacted 30 times for advertising, even from advertisers who didn't even attend LAC.

I highly suspect that email lists are sold on or passed on to various companies. For example, we've been receiving annoying emails from a company called 3gadz.com based in Israel. Numerous employees contact us with spammy requests, and even don't take us off their lists when you ask to be removed. What's even worse is that they generate false LinkedIn requests to some of our email addresses that don't even have LinkedIn accounts. It just seems these guys will DO ANYTHING to try get a lead, but it's totally the wrong way to do things if you want a lead with us, as we ignore 99% of unsolicited requests!

Perhaps the LAC affiliate attendee list is public somewhere. The latest bunch of people we didn't talk to just emailed us - Income Access, most likely trying to peddle some unknown sportsbooks to us that they did a couple of years ago too!

Don't fall into the trap of feeding these spammers! Having been to most of the conferences since their inception I now guard my contact details very closely, yet they still fall through the net somehow.

They openly admit to using spam techniques to try get your business.

Just so you know we do not ever give anyones contact details out - It would be suicide for us so 100% wouldn't do it - The only way they could get names of attendees is using the app but it would be a hugely laborious process as they can't I don't think copy and paste there

Got tons of Emails from these jerks. One day I told them that I would report them as spammer if they d sent me a further email. Next days I got new Emails from Zack, Dan and Jason, Linkedin, G+ requests and a FB add... WTF?

I have already sent screenshots and email copies to spamhaus.org with the request to blacklist the domain...

Ummm could you explain the "using the app" meaning.

Does that mean that those that do attend actually have their email details available somewhere on a list that could be extracted?

I had signed up at IGB but removed myself after the Atlantis conference. Man! I got slammed with snail mail and email. A lot from Atlantis resorts that I have never heard of and they hadnt heard of me.

It made me very angry.

That was awhile ago and no probs after that.

Nope no email is anywhere - They can see the info that is on the badge i.e. name and company but with a bit of work you can get people's contact details from the internet although this would be a laborious process

@Mojo we didn't put on the Atlantis event - That was CAP which we weren't involved with at all - In fact I am not sure if we had launched our events even at that point - Actually just checked we had organised our first event the Jan preceding that but as I say we had nowt to do with the Atlantis one and if you stayed there then the hotel would have your contact details hence the mails from them

It's a bit of a sideline as to whether the organiser's data is secure, which I trust it is. Even if the organiser's data is 100% secure, the moment you hand out your details to many people on the conference floor, they'll find their way onto mailing lists that are sold, exchanged, stolen, "acquired", in the same way that your referred players to some of the more unscrupulous operators are cross sold other products without you gaining credit for that.

The most annoying aspect is the people who walk around with barcode scanners trying to snatch your details. I saw at least 5 people cover their badges with their hands, and one person getting quite irate at one of these scanner people (who incidentally quite often have no connection with the company collecting the data i.e. some dolled up girl in very little clothing who is told by company x to go around and gather data), asking them what they were doing and who they were working for. The poor girl didn't even know who she was collecting the data for!

If conferences are to become more professional it's activity like this that needs to be removed. I would advise people to not wear a badge - you can introduce yourself perfectly well, and don't wear the arm-band - the coloured band is a perfect flag that allows people to approach and hassle you as an affiliate.

The less you get hassled and diverted by people you have no interest in, the more business you'll get done.

Some may say the above approach is cynical. I'd say it's practical - from a seasoned affiliate who has been to a lot of these things!

So you are saying for 100% certain that a rogue could not extract email data from the app, regardless of how laborious of a process it would be?

If something is laborious then people automate it. Just because it's laborious doesn't mean someone won't do it.

If it's possible then someone will find an automated way of doing it (or literally pay some low paid people to manually trawl it), just as they could trawl the member profiles on GPWA and other forums.

Agree with webanalysissolutions - Where there is a will there is a way - Fact is we all leave footprints all over the web however careful we are and its super easy to find most peoples details if you try - a good example is when private members apply here other private members see their email - I have always wondered if GPWA put seeds in there to check security because however nice most people are there are definitely the minority that will be logging these emails.... or maybe I am just a cynic
