Do any of you have any experience advertising an affiliate website through banner ads? I don't mean Google Ads here.
Can it be worth while to advertise an affiliate website in such a way?

It depends what site you have them on, if the site has little to do with gambling and you put banners up they will get almost no conversions.
Even on targeted gambling sites I think banners perform far worse compared to bespoke units. They break every 5 minutes, get blocked by ad-blockers and if you self-host them they often end up non-compliant.
Ask yourself when was the last time you clicked a banner ad?
Yes, I tried and it definitely worth if you doing is for SEO. As you will get one more additional backlink (very possible from homepage) + you may get some referral traffic too. In case you want run it to get more deposits that is also a good way to attract new players. BTW thanks for creating the thread as my colleagues had same discussion last week about banner ads. I want to see more opinions here.
I would double what gil.langelaan said! In case of SEO it can bring good effect. In a long run, it can also bring few deposits. Try some homepage banner spaces from the forums.

I have to be honest, I never thought about SEO with regards to banner ads.
Please explain how this works: if you have a banner add somewhere, you get a backlink (obviously), but when the ad campaign is over, your ad is removed and so should be your backlink. What am I missing here?
If you don't want to continue the ads campaign you will lose the backlink. It depends on did you get any effect after placing the banner.
Personally, we buying banners links for a 3, 6, or 12-month period. And after placing we check the effect. If our positions grew after the link was indexed so probably we will attract more players to the website from google and we need to prolong our campaign for a longer period to continue with advertising and backlink.
Interesting thoughts. Instead of buying text links, you buy banner links. The main reason to do that is the same (as far as I understand from the above posters): SEO. As this might increase rankings, it might increase SEO traffic, which increases signups at casinos.
Casinos also place banners - but their reason to do it is to get more traffic and to get more players, not for SEO reasons.
I personally doubt that a correctly placed banner (with a nofollow link) increases your Google rankings. And I also doubt that you can measure that effect on SEO because there are too many moving variables.
So I'd try to figure out what a banner visitor to my site is worth, and count the clicks that banner generated. Then I could figure out if that banner is worth it.
Another way to use banner ads is to directly promote casinos (not your own website). Then it's even easier to measure results.

I agree, Interesting thoughts
Those of you who did (or still do) advertise your affiliate sites through banner ads, are you advertising on finance blogs, gambling blogs, other affiliate sites, trading sites (like Forex) or something else?
I'm curious which of these would you consider as the best target audience for you.
Banner ads are too expensive. Even in websites where there is a possible conversion ROI wise it won't make any sense. Better to go for some guestposts
Strider1973 said some good things, imho.

Some very goof points raised in this discussion.
personally and agreeing with some of the other comments.... banner ads can be useful when placed correctly to your filtered target markets.
More importantly to monitor the "success" of the banner and decide what works for you and your market.
The more refined your filter / target placement is the more success you should have.
Considering that there are services that do just this - with great success.
But still, where besedis UK can you advertise banner ads? You will get banned from google ads very quiclky.
@adovich definitely, Specially Native ads pretty good. if you have nice banner for display, the traffic could be really cheap and you can earn good ROI with such ads
