Question What languages do you use for content on your websites?

Last year a year ago a poll was started I asked affiliates whether they ran a website in their native language or in a foreign language or both. Over 40% of webmasters said they operated websites in both their native language and a foreign language. You can see that poll here:

Do you run a website in your native language or in a foreign language?

For this week's poll I thought it would be interesting to ask what languages webmasters are actually using in their websites. There are statistics estimating the percent of different content languages used on the Internet. As of today, W3Techs publishes the following data:

Usage statistics of content languages for websites

    1. 61.8% English
    2. 7.7% Russian
    3. 3.8% Turkish
    4. 3.8% Spanish
    5. 3.5% Persian
    6. 2.6% French
    7. 2.1% German
    8. 1.9% Japanese
    9. 1.8% Vietnamese
    10. 1.3% Chinese
    11. 1.1% Arabic
    12. 0.8% Portuguese
    13. 0.7% Indonesian
    14. 0.7% Greek
    15. 0.7% Italian

So, I ask that you vote in the poll based on the languages you use on your sites. Besides voting in the poll, please share your thoughts on the language or languages you use on your sites and whether you have plans to expand to additional languages. And, if you provide content in other languages not listed above, please let us know the additional languages you use.

We start our affiliate sites in English and then usually add other languages at a later date based on which markets our content would mostly appeal to.

Recently added Italian, Polish and Brazilian Portuguese for our casino banking website and plan to also add Spanish, Finnish, Swedish and German probably in the near future.

As we already provide the content in 30+ languages ourselves (with the help of vetted native freelancers), it makes it easier for us to relatively quickly add quality native content in various languages*.

I've heard that some other affiliates use automatic translations to add new languages, see how the pages rank and then use human translators to adapt the pages that rank well. Being content providers ourselves, this is not something we are looking to consider any time soon.

*Hope I'm not making this sound like an ad for our services as it was not meant like one.

    I create a website in 4 languages.
    English
    Espanol
    Portuguese
    Russian

The website is not ready yet, but I decided to stick to multilingualism from the beginning, instead of adding at a later date.

As for automatic translation, I don't think it's a good solution. However, I found a lot of high-ranking sites that have such content (moderately competitive keywords). However, google translator is definitely not suitable for this. There are better translators, e.g. DeepL.
Probably with the development of technology, in 10 years, human translations will become a thing of the past.
However, currently the only reasonable choice seems to be human translation on my own website to be fully professional.

Use Yandex Translate for translations of English to Russian; it is way better than Google. You can even throw in there a site URL, and it will translate the content for you. However, you would still need a native proofreader to go through and to make sure it all sounds bang on.

But I would suggest you be extra cautious when promoting anything gambling related to citizens in Russia. Why?

1st: The soon you start ranking, your competitors will simply kill your site.
2nd: Online gambling in Russia is banned. It's enough to send an email (by your competitor) to Roskomnadzor through their contact form and tell them that your website carries content that is prohibited in the Russian Federation. And believe me or not, they won't fack around with it—the least you'll have to block all Russia's IP's through your htaccess.

How do I know this? I had one site blocked globally, and with the 2nd, I had to block their IP to keep it alive.

Roskomnadzor knows very well that Russians live in many countries of the world and perform searches in Russian while living in the US, EU, CA, etc., for example, but they won't give a shiit about it.

Those who promote online casinos in Russia use promo or coupon codes instead of a direct affiliate link to the operators' site; here is an example.

    Thanks for your comments.
I know that Russia blocks such websites, but I decided only because I have a person who translates well in terms of quality and inexpensively into Russian. Apart from translating, I do not plan to promote this language version too much.

I am aware that it will be blocked, but I decided after reading the GPWA mines that it is still worth it because

    1. Russian is not only Russia, of course it is not a global language like English or Spanish, but it is used, for example, in Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan and in several other countries.

    2. A lot of Russians use VPN.

However, I was a bit worried, I don't want my website to be damaged, especially since I don't have extensive technical knowledge. The site is not yet published and much of the content is already translated into Russian.
Could it be a good solution to block Russia from htaccess before publishing the site in Russian language?

I wanted to ask out of curiosity if it works? From what I read, it has a negative effect on SEO, but I haven't tried it in practice.

That the thing! They know that really well that there are a lot of Russian speaking people round the world, but they won't care about it. In case shiit hapens they'll see you'r website is available in Russia, which means your content is made for people who are living there.

So to be on the safe side i would block access to your site from Russia.

    I sent a PM

However, to be honest, yesterday I was browsing the statistics of websites from my niche, i.e. bookmakers, and most of the websites are exclusively English-speaking, but there is quite a lot of traffic from non-English-speaking countries. Of course, the majority are the US, UK, Canada, Australia and India. However, later countries such as Indonesia, Sweden, Germany, and many other non-English speaking countries with decent organic searches were repeated on many pages. On the other extreme, the Spanish-speaking countries, despite the fact that there are a lot of them on most sites, I did not see them in the lead or even in the middle of the rate, at least in my small test group they were "the worst" Obviously, global English will be displayed in many countries on all continents. However, I thought it was a smaller percentage. Such data, in turn, encourages focusing on one language.

English and Spanish at the moment and working on French and Portuguese. Tough to get good writers with multiple languages.

Affiliate sites are in Japanese only. It is based on a market that promotes online casinos for Japanese and whose content is primarily appealing. In Japan, there are almost no sites that use other words than Japanese.

The website I own uses Japanese, which is my mother tongue.
I'm interested in running a website in English, but I haven't got enough time to do so.

On most sites I use English.
