I did actually work out that MSN were demoting sites with affiliate links back in 2002 though, I cloaked all mine and ranked very well. Those were the days when you would get some ok traffic from other search engines.

Hardwork.. that's the secret.. to keep going over and over and over sometimes for years until it works.. however too many think there is a shortcut and secret to success.

i really think there is no SEO secret, "secret" sounds as if there is one ingredient which will fix all your SEO problems or get your ranking immediately .. its like the secret ingredient In a recipe - but with seo DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY - different websites, different markets, niches etc Will require different SEO strategies and what gets u ranking in one might not in the other. So there could not be 1 single SEO secret - u need to work out the right synergies between seo tactics for the niche and market u r in. Good look. If u ask something more specfic I AM SURE U WILL FIND BETTER AND MORE useful answers

I think linking some to authority sites helps. i.e. https://www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk/

No magic bullet though

as amazing as a link from the gambling commission website would be, it is likely impossible to get - gov. websites almost never ever gives links out but that isnt to get disheartened . Look at your number 1 competitor and see what links they r getting

All the time you are doing a lot and all the time you don't know what will work and help you to rank.
It's about quality of backlink profile and great content, work with conversion, technical issues and etc.

I would say brand searches (like "domain.com" and variations) will boost your rankings.

However, don't try this at home (i.e. using traffic bots, buying crowd search services). Try to find a way for the brand searches to be organic, either by making a wonderful, unique, superb website (not the case for 99% of online businesses, myself included) or use visual elements
