What is the benchmark traffic volume for a successful website?

Hello All,

For the below periods after going live, what are the traffic benchmarks for a successful website project? (in terms of unique visits and/or pageviews)

3 months
6 months
1 year
1-3 years
3+ years

There's no real benchmark as the value of the traffic is far more important than the volume.

This ^^ so many people get absorbed with numbers.. 100,000 visits on low value keywords are nowhere near as good as 10,000 high value keywords but most people judge sites based on volume, but to answer your question going full out on building a good site it's typically a year until you start seeing decent profit.

Agreed. So there is the "ageing" issue on the table. Right? May have a weak effect but it is valid.

Many years ago I experimented with traffic by buying 1000s of daily visitors from a number of social media sites, but the traffic simply didn't convert. There is nothing like targeted search engine traffic, no matter how little it is.

I completely wholeheartedly agree with you. Even Google AdWords and Bing Ads type PPC traffic are way too lower in terms of efficiency.

The minimum limit for traffic and site to get back some of the worth and money spent on it is nearly a year. For my first project, it took me a year and a half to monetize it. The traffic volume is a measure that is built up very slowly and with persistence, not only from Google, Bing, Yahoo , Yandex and all the crawling robots and machines which indicate the content well. It is time consuming "struggle". I had also paid for different types of traffic , but the conversion was close to zero.

100 million, if that's what I set a bot up to do. Different geo-targeted IP's, click-throughs and everything. As the rest have said, that's an inaccurate and easily engineered metric. Depositing Players is what you want (to start). You can add a custom marker/tracking on the page in Google Webmaster Tools to identify when they hit the thank you page or on multiple pages to verify you aren't losing them in places like your payment processing. Then use Google Analytics to follow the stats. Be aware there is a 24-48 hour lag, but accurate enough for free and your need.

Hey, just be careful not to do too much work everyday, because Google might ban your site(s). They'll basically just put you in what is called the 'Google Sandbox' for a period of three months or so.

You're welcome. All I meant was that you just don't need to do too much SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) work all the time. For example, If you do just a little bit of work everyday, Google will trust your site(s) more, and will also see that you are not putting in too much work very quickly and that will give them a chance to look over your site, accept it, recognise it and see that you are taking your time to work on it carefully and properly.
