I'd say only in the actual post that is relevant to your site's content. I think Google will discount site wide links. I think that worked at one time, but not any more. My mental model of SEO is to model your site based off of organic acquisition of readers. It's hard to do, but anything other than good quality content is doomed. Techniques that used to be so easy are no longer viable. ir. directories, sitewide paid links, PR sites, link networks, and reciprical links.

Google said it before: Content is King! - It really does not matter, from my point of view, where you place the link, as long as it does makes sense to be there, is natural and relevant to content surrounding it.
So, it would make a lot of sense for a link to a hosting company to be in the footer along with "Hosted by x" or "Powered by y" and it would not make any sense to have a casino footer link to a general website. Instead, I see a casino link in a nice, well written, well documented and casino related article posted in a general website. Keep in mind that such article will most likely rank good in organic search and it will pass some of that authority to your website.
    Good Luck!

I would have thought within content post itself. As previous posters say, content is king.

The link in the content carries more weight, and if link closer to the beginning of the text its better.

I would go so far as to say that site wide links are probably not a good idea in modern times.

Post - footer links look spammy. Create good content and you will get links, although in today's competitive world everyone else builds links so its almost becoming a must.

Relevance is important, and footer links usually look too spammy.

There are so many things to consider now... google's AI is too clever for a barrage of links to be used to bolster DA like it used to... the links (ideally) should come from articles of relevance ... its not just about the content either ... google is even smarter than that ... it assesses the scores based on your own profile as well as the site pointed a link towards you... bit naughty really as it means the big boys have a huge advantage when following the exact same procedures... anyway, if you can find decent sites that allow for casino articles then thats the way to go... quality over quantity (site DA/ content/ your own content (where link is pointing) all important factors

Google itself is making SEO a difficult task for us to do. At this point, quality matters. Both in link building and on-page optimization. Quality content that is user-friendly is really important. so yeah there's that.

a mix of links works best - make it look natural by adding a few blogs, directories, etc. But the holy grail is getting a backlink from a newssite thru some kind of PR stunt. Not easy to do, but so worth it!

Google prefers links from content, it's better for you becuse the context is super important. When you get a link cross-footer, meaning, it's a credit or something. If you will do exact keyword + DF from footer...you can start count your days, it's an old technique. I did it years ago, it works for a while.....but that's it.
