Sports Interaction betting analyst Frank Doyle looks ahead at some good bets for the UEFA Champions League soccer semi-finals, which start next week.

The Champions League semi-finals are played over two legs, as each team visits the other’s stadium, with goals scored away from home being used to break up ties. The Final Four is always special but this year the entire football world, from Africa north to the Arctic, from Vladivostok all they way west to Vancouver, BC, are concentrating on one particular semi-final.

In Spain, it’s called El Clasico. It’s the rivalry that has defined Spanish football throughout its history and now, in the superclub era, it’s become the defining rivalry of world club soccer. It’s Real Madrid and Barcelona, and it’s going down in Real’s fortress, the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, on Wednesday night.

The betting is close for the first leg, with Real a slight favorite for home advantage, but betting the tie a wise and prudent move. Real have been extremely defensively minded this year, a new style for the famously swashbuckling club but one in keeping with the style of their new coach, Jose Mourinho.

In soccer coaching, Mourinho is Bill Belichick, Red Auerbach and General George S Patton rolled into one, and it’s because of him that Real are back in the final four for the first time in many years.

And in the blue and red corner, Barcelona, the best current club side in the world and a team that have not only the best player in the world, Argentina’s Lionel Messi, but two or three others, in midfielders Xavi Hernandez and Andries Iniesta of Spain.

Barcelona will attack, attack, attack all night but if Madrid can stop them scoring an away goal then Mourinho brings Madrid to Barcelona with the advantage ?an advantage he will maximise with his infamous mastery of gamesmanship. It’s a big if, as Barcelona lead Madrid by eight points in the Spanish League, but the probable odds of +900 or thereabouts on a 0-0 draw in the first leg in Madrid is an excellent bet.

In the other semi-final, England’s Manchester United are favorites to travel to Germany and come back with all three points. Manchester United are one of the great clubs of the world, and their wily old manager Sir Alex Ferguson has assembled yet another side that look likely for domestic and European glory.

Schalke are on a dream run in Europe, inspired in part by Raul, a Real Madrid veteran who is a having an Indian summer to his career, but it will be a shock of shocks if Schalke are still standing in Manchester at the of the second leg. Manchester United to progress to yet another Champions League Final at short odds is the bet.
