Researching keywords for newbies

I dunno you might be interested, Since starting in the industry I have been trying all sorts of things to improve my site traffic.

I don't think everyone should share their strategies but I want to share the best tool I have used so far. I been using keywordspy for researching best keywords I can go for and I have to say I really recommmend it.

I made a post about it and basically outlines easily the competition we are in and a way that people with less income can work a strategy that will be good for them.

I thought it was steep at $85 a month but I went for it anyway. I used to use semoz.org alot but I think the best combination you can have is this + seomoz.

I have a little screenshot on my post circling the areas you want to focus on. I hope you do find it helpful, with the tool - it has free trial as well which will give you 10 results but in all honesty I went the subscription cos I am nosey and like to see what keywords i could be picking up and utilising for my site.

Also if anyone reads and doesn't understand you can always pm me or post back here to ask questions about how to figure it all out.

This would carry more weight if the link did not lead to a page which then contained a sales pitch which also carried an affiliate link...

Although I always welcome discussions on the pros and cons of such software...

CJ, are you of the opinion market samurai is better?

How do the 2 compare price wise?

I am addicted to it tho I think it is made worse by the fact whenever i get excited about something i end up sounding like a big ass sales pitch.

but I really love it, i was gunna not share but i wanted to. It's really helped me ALOT in figuring out what i should be going for.

Sorry if it sounded like sales pitch! I can't help it I always sound like that when I'm revved up about something

If you can get past my terrible writing and read the explanation and also look at screenshot I did up to show you how I use it I reckon alot could benefit from it because It has done wonders for me knowing how to use it.

I hate saying I love something because everyone thinks I just trying to sell it but the truth is I was gunna keep it to myself but then I thought you know what no one ever shares and its not fair on newbies starting out losing money on simple mistakes that everyone knows not to make but doesnt share.

I wish i could make it sound non salesly, my dads a salesman so the banter kind of runs in the family when we get excited over stuff we find lol.

I don't at all want you to think its sales crap, reason i ended up writing so much is i just starting writing about what I know about the market so far xD

it's not meant to come out like that at all. If you wanna rewrite it to be less salesy you can help me though! =D I tried to rewrite and I can't get it non sales looking

In any case you know I really think its awesome

I'm now ranking 23# for one of the keywords i pulled from there and #7 and another one #56 so I am going great getting together all my keywords. For me it has really worked out so well.

As for affiliate link the reason i put that there is I am giving out really good information on how I use it and the research I have done on the backlinking stuff I figured the least others could do is signup thru my link for giving out some nice information! you can't find the figures there anywhere else on forums unless you looked and researched it yourself. So i thought I am giving away good secrets that people guard in seo and link building so why not get some love if someone decides to do the same strategies I use

Because I spend hours days weeks months researching competition and I am giving away information that would take someone a while to even consider looking for.

Some people are smarter then average and will be doing this anyway but for people who don't know about this stuff - not many will tell you about it without wanting % of your business or without telling you wrongly. ( my experience)

So I thought because I am showing you exactly what I do to improve my position and my marketing then why the hell not should i get some referral love! After all most people don't even realise how many backlinks top brands have and they go for all the wrong keywords.

In the article i wrote I am saying my rule of thumb for poor chaps in under 8million and go for it. Even this sounds saley lol but anyway I think those who look past my writing and read what I have to say there will realise I am talking about something that will help them.

universal - sorry if i sound defensive as well it's just that I was umming and arring whether i should even tell people what i know and even know its sounds saley its such imperative information - there is no way anyone on a 30k job should be trying to compete with keywords that have 23million results but i see people trying for it all the time and no one tells them then what happens is they go and have to sell up in a few months I dunno I like helping and I kinda get miffed seeing people not tell others when they are keywording wrong - but i understand your concerns with it sounding saley but if you read it its great information is it not?

I had look at that market samurai but it looks to much like a scammer site for me to even consider signing up to try haha

Thing i really like about keywordspy is you can also check top affiliate market products as well so it's not limited in function.

I'm already thinking about making a mmo games section on my site for all the wow gold junkies lol

My advice for New affiliates:

Big affiliates who earn up to 30k per month have the cash to spend on agressive advertising campaigns - If you like me and have only just started getting into the affiilate campaign and monetizing your blogs then you really don't have the capital for agressive advertsing.

The next best thing - What you do have is a wealth of keywords that can drive traffic to your blogs - You don't HAVE to go for high targeted keywords a small amount of alot of less desierable keywords will still give you traffic! for example x2 keywords with only 1200 volume still means you can get 2400 volume.

Go for small but achievable keywords and just build it up from there. Once you start getting noticed for the smaller things you will slowly be able to build up your site for more heavy targeted keywords! In this view we have searched a compeitor and it orders by keywords driving most traffic - you will see they have over 2500 keywords! WOW that is alot! That many words will take a few years for anyone to get however if you get started now on what you need to target in your articles body copy then you will be well on your way.

As a general rule of thumb I go for keywords with at least 50,000 volume per month and less then 8 million results - this is WAY more achievable for a normal affiliate.

Lets face it If you aren't a company then you simply don't have the funds to create 100 thousand backlinks.

BACKLINKS - This is the next major hurdle

What you need to do is target 1 keyword per page you make and then have your anchor text the same as your keyword.

so for example I want to target "No deposit casino" then I make a page about no deposit casinos online and link back to that page.

Competition backlinks as of June 2010
www. xxxxxx .com 19040 (medium dog)
www. xxxxxx .com 103400 (top dog)
www. xxxxxx .com 117700 (top dog) <- This one does 40k a month

RPROBLEM WITH BEING IN HEAVY COMPETITION:

Your biggest affiliates are making 20-30k a month but have spent over 50k buying the advertsing(how do i know? my whole family is in this business). SO your main problem is how can you compete? The only way you could compete is to target the less popular and go for VOLUME of keywords rather then competitive ones. you would be better off going for 7000 keywords with a result of less then 3million competition then you would if you were going for a higher keyword.

The highest earning affiliates have: minium 20 thousand backlinks and maximum 98 thousand backlinks. Thats alot of exchanging for the small guy/gal.... But don't be disheartened just because they have this many doesn't mean you can't backlink for volume keywords.

GREEN = SEARCH VOLUME AND KEYWORD

PINK= COMPETITION VOLUME ( go for 8mil under if your not wealthy)

You will see a rise in your traffic after a month of reworking your campaign and content from using keyword spy. I have done it and helped others do it and they have had an increase of over 400% in traffic over a month and keeps climbing. I would not recommend it if i didn't personally know it was awesome.

How do you figure out how to use it?

EASY say you want to find out what is driving traffic to my site - you type in pandragon.com and make sure you check domains on search bar. then it will come to a results page - From here click on "organic keywords" this will show you what traffic is coming to my site with the organic keywords. As you can see from there it will include a list on how much competition for that keyword and the search volume per month.

I really do recommend it for any affiliate who is looking to get some money out of affiliate marketing. It's a must have I have an account there as well it's just incredible. I don't mean to sound like i am plugging it but seriously ******* awesome lol.

Pan's rule for under 8mil:

Search for volume at least 1 - 200k
Results must be LESS then 8,000, 000 (Be realistic can you afford to compete against companies??? If your a mom or stay at home wife NO)
Create a big keyword list pick off 30 - 400 keywords even if they are only 1k search still adds up!
Long tail keywords are where your traffic comes from anyway!
