As for your sporting ignorance ... real football will always be football ...
I think the NFL needs to become the NHEL (National Hand Egg League) in order to correctly identify their sport.
Still - it's only going to be an issue for a short while ...
Once the law suits start coming in on player concussions in the next few years - I expect the Hand Egg game to be banned completely.

They call it football because the ball is exactly 1 foot long (unless Brady is playing and he lets some air out)
Still it will always be American Football, with REAL Football being the one that was invented centuries before American football, and played worldwide.

The NFL has set measurement rules for the overall length and largest circumference at the center of the football. An official NFL football is slightly larger than high school or other professional leagues. The length should measure about 11 inches from tip to tip, and the in circumference at the center of the football should measure about 22 inches.
