Default Help with Valuation of Finance Domain

Hi All, I am not sure if this is the correct thread to post this in, but I own a domain called smarteller.com which I want to sell. It was registered in 2004 and although there is content on it, I never pursued the concept so I would treat it as a domain and not a live website as such.

The problem is that being a gambling affiliate myself, I don't know where to start in terms of establishing a price for it.

I would be very grateful if anyone here could give me some ideas/ thoughts on a realistic starting price.

Having had the same question for other domains, what I learned is that valuation is pretty much impossible, other than putting it on the market and seeing what it will bring in. Auctions theoretically find the true market price, but buyers are way more likely to buy a fixed-price domain rather than one through an auction. So, the best thing to do is probably to offer it for sale at an extremely high fixed price, where you'd be happy if it sold but it probably won't. Then every week or month, lower the price until it sells. If you're worried about leaving money on the table ("What if my extremely high price is actually too low?"), then go ahead and offer it at auction.

While every domain is different, the best way to understand domain values is to look at comps, how much other domains have been selling for, e.g. DN Journal.

The price of a business like that is considered 8 times of the annual profit.

8 times the annual is super high for almost ANY business in these times, and certainly over and above most industries.

It is possible some financial businesses could gain enough attention that some would consider that kind of multiplier, BUT the valuation of strictly the domain itself is much harder to quantify.

I have known of the domain as stated above, well since the beginning pretty much, and I think it is a GREAT domain for the banking sector, or an e-wallet or maybe a crypto wallet or site marketing such.

I wonder if possibly this would sell the best on Sedo possibly. Sending PM

It is really just the domain that is worth anything as the original business plan did not materialize due to our Business partners at the time ( State Bank of Mauritius ) doing the dirty on us.

5X annual earning is/was somewhat if a long running overall business average standard (not industry specific).

not sure if that's still the case. a little fun fact i learned in college a guess

So if there are not earnings and its domain only as you said, who knows how to value it.

the right buyer at the right time = a great price
any buyer asap = ****** price

so if its a great domain i would wait for the right time and right buyer

if its a so-so domain, the right buyer will most likely never come along

It's like anything for sale, if there are interested buyers, then you've got a chance of making some decent dollars. Though, in these current times, I'd be holding out, and waiting for things to improve. Unless you desperate to sell, then I guess you'll get far less.

I have an aged domain dating back 12 years. It targets AU pokies. Got an offer of $20K for it back in 2012, and declined the offer. After the 2017 IGA made it illegal for me to promote casino to other AU citizens, I decided to put that domain up for sale. I was asking far less than $20K.

Lets just say, it didn't sell, and I still have it

I would get rid of the current site, which looks a bit dated and serves no purpose, and add a modern landing page that indicates the domain is for sale and it's potential uses. Add a contact form too.

I did that for a .com gambling domain that I was struggling to sell and within a month I had a buyer.

The KISS (keep it stupid simple) principle, always works well. That's a brilliant suggestion DD. And, it makes 100% sense!

Tricky name to price because most financial services run under a brand and believe that their brand is the biggest selling point.
But just like the biggest search engine isn't found at searchengine.com ... I suspect that smarteller.com is too functionally generic.

But if there is a new entrant into bank services that does have some sort of smart teller then you're in ...
You only need ONE person to disagree to get it sold. I love the idea of "DaftDog" above ...

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I have a bit of a clearer direction in mind and I think I will go along with DaftDogs Suggestion ( Thanks Mark ) and will get something up on the home page, and will also list it at Sedo as suggested by others as well.

You check out dnpric.es for historical domain sales that also might help

better check in some domain forum and ask someone in domain group in linkedin, people are quite helpful there.
