Google Core Update May.. looks big

After the update I've seen a very good and impressive jump for some keywords on Search Console, but then the same keywords started to drop down. What do you think the reason for that could be?

Just did a search for "bovada bonus". The top 17 results are all from the Bovada site. No affiliates. A few sites that were on page one are now on pages 3 & 4.

Yeah, seeing a good increase in my own old seo spam sites, which are totally forgotten on various hosts. I think it has something to do with the UX :P

No change on my other sites, which are very new and don't matter too much, however, Ahrefs shows increasing number of keywords, which is good. Google Webmasters console also showing steady to "slowly increasing" positions, despite the traffic loss (sports). Waiting for this weekend to see how Bundesliga restart will affect the lost traffic.

Two sites I am closely monitoring (with Ahrefs) are dropping by 100k keywords each. Not sure how realiable this is, since they are still in the SERPS.

For other niches:

Seeing huge drops for (old) authority sites in pharma/pills niche and increase for new, spammy sites.
Building sites on high authority expired domains is still big business, so Google is still dumb in this area.

There has been plenty of movement continuously since this started but I can't see any real patterns so far. It seems to be still rolling and early but not much chat about what google have rewarded so far from seo experts

This puts me in mind of some of the changes that happened after the Medic update. Pushing big businesses/official pages to the top, dropping everyone else down below.

I lost 30% of the rankings in some of my sites! Still don't have a clue about the reason..

I think it's important to be patient and wait and see after a few more weeks, let things settle.

After one month updates, traffic down 50%

Huge jump in ranks when the new algo update rolled out. like almost 120% jump.

Levelled out slightly since then, but still in better positions than prior to the update.

Mostly grey hat methods over here.

Im seeing things jump up.. and down, this year has been the strangest I have seen, I was reading some thhreads over at different places with people doing massive backlink building for months with 0 affect, of course backlink sellers will tell you this is not true, My opinion is that BL have been dialed down massively and content and experience up, I am also looking at a site in a highly competitive niche have insane boosts with almost no backlinks, but awesome content... anyone else seen anything like this?

Pretty graphs those has to be said! I’d assume that site is pretty strong also with key speed metrics.

I found that the latest update appeared to give a real boost to one or two of my more comprehensive sites, even ones without an enormous amount of backlinks. I was pleasantly surprised, as typically I dread to hear of impending Google Updates!

COVID-19 related searches are now the most popular searches on Google, and it must be reflected on other searches. During the coronavirus pandemic, searches in our niches are increasing, but also percentage of searches in our niches are decreasing. Because of that we have a big fluctuation. It's my opinion.
