Thumbs down Australian online gambling gets set to fall ... but which way?

It's become clear that both sides of Australian politics want to see an end to folks punting online - see below*

Formerly, it was just the Labor Party. Will things go the way of USA, or maybe the more moderate UK? How would you approach the call for public submissions from the Government - to argue the case for regulation, rather than prohibition? I intend to lodge a submission, that gambling should be regulated not murdered.

Of course, if online gambling is done away with, farewell the gambling crazy Australian players - it's being touted that legislation will force credit card companies to return cash to losing gamblers! It will be interesting to see how this unfolds over 2012. If you have any good debating points in favour of regulation, many thanks for your sage words in advance. * To see the article you can Google: Crikey News - "Offended by 'nanny state', Coalition wants more censorship on gambling" Believe it or not, Crikey is a legitimate news site.

    Cheers,

    Hendo

Legalise online gambling - earn millions from the tax, make online gambling safer, and use the money generated to help problem gamblers. Australia needs to get with the times - you can't stop people gambling online - address the issue!

I'm sure it's because we are here
The first Aussie one was awesome apart from the rain. Opera Bar is a great location for drinks
The weather was much better for the second one.

The countries trying to ban it for "gambling problem" reasons should just tax/regulate it then use the money to help problem gamblers. You can't say it's for problem gambling when you're taking tax money from the pokies!

    Hi All,

I think all Governments say that they are concern about minors accessing gambling sites and players using unsecured sites, but the bottom line is that the governments want to get their piece of the regulated taxes. At the end of the day the Gambling sites that are focused in the Australian Market will take a hit and will have to decide if it’s really is worth for them to focus in Australia.

Don’t get me wrong, as a mother I do agree that it’s wrong for minors to have such an easy access to gambling sites (they don’t know better) and gambling addiction is an illness, so the Australian consumer will benefit from the legalization as long as the government takes care of their needs.

    Regards,
