1. Lampard Still Oozes Class

It was written in the stars that once Manuel Pellegrini called upon Frank Lampard from the Manchester City bench, that he would leave his footprint against his former side Chelsea. Brought on with over 12 minutes to play, the 36-year old was given a tremendous reception by both sets of fans before making an instant impact in midfield. Once a floated pass was made to James Milner inside the area, Lampard made his run as he has done so many times in royal blue. There would be only one outcome, a volleyed effort into the bottom corner of the net. His spacial awareness in and around the box still remains at a fantastic level along with the utmost professionalism that proves he is amongst England’s greatest midfielders.

2. Manchester United’s Defensive Woes Continue

The start Manchester United made against Leicester City was one full of optimism and encouragement. Van Gaal lined-up with Di Maria, Rooney, Falcao and Van Persie in his XI with Juan Mata the man relegated to the bench. Di Maria and Falcao both started brightly in taking a 0-2 lead. The Red Devils extended this to 1-3 before their defensive line collapsed. Rafael gave away an awful penalty as did Blackett before the Englishman was sent off. Marcos Rojo also looked out of place at times and uneasy with the physicality of the English game. With such a World class attack for Louis van Gaal’s side, their defensive woes are inexcusable for a team that possesses such financial power.

3. Does Gerrard Need a Break?

Ever since the 2014 English World Cup embarrassment Steven Gerrard has looked a shadow of the man that led his side to touching point of Premier League glory last season. His retirement from International duty shows that the summer has been one that has taken a serious toll on the 34-year old. During Liverpools opening games of the campaign, Steven Gerrard has failed to make a serious impact on the field. He has, on numerous occasions, looked a tired figure in the middle of the park which has been evident in his performances where he lost possession at least a dozen times against West Ham on Saturday evening. The Englishmans passing was also far from its best; making only 57% pass completion in the offensive half. This is surely a sign that Gerrard needs a break from the starting XI after such a draining summer in Brazil. Is the Liverpool legend suffering from fatigue? It’s starting to look that way.
